Pain Links

All of these links point to what is at the moment my favourite kind of gender-related site. These sites contain personal stories and original writings by men who feel as though they've been screwed over by women. Some of these opinions may be extreme or pathetic or both, but at least they're honest and get to the heart of the kind of things I once went through. As with my other lists of links, I'm going to try to describe the sites, so you don't have to go on endless fishing expeditions.

  • This guy must have gotten in on the game early, because 'www.misogyny.com' is one hell of a URL. The site starts off with the statement 'I HATE WOMEN' but it's not as full of spitting invective as one would find on a site that starts off 'I HATE MEN.' It's really a calm discussion of the pain and suffering endured by men who don't make the grade and so who can't get love, affection, or even dates. It's a bit tricky to navigate because some of the better material is only accessible by following an apparently unrelated link. There are particularly poignant stories here and here.

  • Women Are The Root Of All Evil? I'm not sure if this site is serious or done with a wink and a nudge, but it too contains some stories about men who have had awful experiences with rotten women. Women talk about this crap all the time, so I can't see how they can object to men talking about it. (OK, I can see them objecting, but only because they're assholes.)¹ As well, I'm partial to anyone who has a link to The Red Green Show on their site: it's a clear indicator that it's not a chick in disguise.

  • The Bitter Male Society looks like men laughing at the crappy situation they find themselves in. This one is heavier on the self-effacing 'beer humour' style, but it's still insightful.

  • Here is a story of another kind: a guy's story about his clobbering his girlfriend. This is an unusual entry in that it's from a man's point of view. Most stories about assaults on women only deal with the woman's point of view, leaving the man as some shadowy ogre whose motivations and thoughts are mysterious if not downright incomprehensible. Here, for once, is a man describing the same scene. The most interesting thing for me was how much pain and frustration came through in what he wrote. Although he's unrepentant and doesn't do a good job defending himself, he does do a great job of pointing out the kind of behaviour that drove him over the edge. It also interested me that he copied her e-mail to him presumably word-for-word into the letter, and I doubt that he edited to make himself look better, because if he did edit then it didn't work. The difference between this and what a woman would write is also interesting: a woman would never include anything in a letter like this that would make her look bad, whereas he felt compelled to make the story complete. Finally, notice how the whole situation becomes messier and harder to judge when you hear both points of view and not just hers. Suddenly it's not so cut and dried, he's not such an inhuman monster, and she's not such an angel. This piece gives me some appreciation of what cops must face when they come upon the aftermath of something like this.

  • I finally got the time to read all of the stories at Chicks Suck. This guy lays it all on the line. He describes himself, his life, his history, and all of his misses with women. Sometimes this isn't a good thing... sometimes his attempts to paint himself in a good light are pathetic, but that only makes what he's writing more real. Women who read this site will probably come away with the impression that this guy is a first class loser. Men will probably come away with a similar impression, but at the same time understand his pain and frustration.

¹ Sure enough, there are responses on this site from women who really hate the site. Surprise, surprise. One that I particularly love says, 'you men. you think you are so damn perfect. most woman have hearts of gold, but with too many holes thanks to men.' Of course, this is unintentionally funny, because this chick doesn't even realize that by saying, 'most women have hearts of gold' she's actually committing the same sin she's accusing the site of. Another great example of 'projection': in my experience, it's the women who think they're perfect and can't tolerate anyone saying otherwise.
